Do you want to upsize that?

I’ve only been in the U.S for two days, and I’ve got one gripe to make. Portion sizes here are very, very different from Dubai (unless you’re eating at Ravi’s!). While you may get ‘bang for your buck’ here with the stockpile of food that constitutes a ‘regular’ order, I was just taken aback but how huge portion sizes were. I know I’m not usually one to complain about size, but this time I’m being serious. Yesterday I popped out for dinner with a fellow Dubaian and we sauntered into a very nice and cosy deli that was nearby. After scouring the menu which seemed to only contain burgers, steaks, steak burgers, and shakes, we settled on two ham & cheese sandwiches and a portion of fries. Not the most healthiest thing on the planet I’ll agree, but you can’t go wrong with ham & cheese. But then came the sandwiches – two thick slices of ham smothered in cheddar cheese, wedged in between two ‘slabs’ of bread. Looking at the sandwich was enough to make my stomach shrink in fear, but I managed to make my way through one half of the sandwich before deciding that I wasn’t even going to look at the second half, or I might just explode. The french fries were cut thickly and looked so appealing, but I didn’t want to be rolled out of the restaurant, so I opted out of their salty goodness. Now here’s where the fun begins – I don’t drink alcohol, so I opted for a glass of chocolate milk instead. The menu said it was a 6oz serving, which is about 1 glass or so, which is more than enough for me. When I told the waiter my order, he looked at me like I was on acid. “6oz serving? That’s the kid’s portion – how about I bring you the 16oz one instead?” 16oz of chocolate milk? Do I look like I’m breastfeeding an army under my jacket?
